But Guldar was stubborn and vindictive. He
fired King Leothals' counselors and replaced them with his own friends,
who helped him in his ambitions for power and glory. He declared
war on Freitall, after a small incident at the border and with this he
nearly destroyed the fragile balance in the Kingdom of Calania. He died at
21 years of age, while he was leading his armies in this dispute. His 2
year younger brother Ramos, succeeded him. Guldar was unmarried when he
died, and didn't have any heirs.
RAMOS (Ruled 952 AGF - 994 AGF) With 19, Ramos was of the same age as his brother Guldar, when he became King. But he was more qualified for this job, as his brother was, and did everything in his powers to become a good King after the image of his father and grandfather. In his early days of kingship, he had the ungrateful task to clean up the mess his brother had left behind. Aided by his fathers advisors and counselors, who were fired by Guldar, first he settled the argument with Freitall, and restored peace. But troublesome times were ahead. Piracy and war disrupted the overseas trading routes. It took over 7 years, before the trading routes could be restored to their full potential. This had been fatal to Calania's economy. The royal treasure had been drained in the three years Guldar had ruled, and the lack of trading was catastrophic to the economy. Ramos tried to intensify trade with Bjordann and Freitall, but this was unsuccessful. The Goods which came from the overseas trade routes, had become too important in the trades with Bjordann and Freitall. The only thing Ramos could do was to restore the old trade routes by force, and therefore he put everything to work, to build a large Naval fleet to aid his allies overseas. Despite the bad economic situation, he was determined. By putting on loans, he managed to get enough funds to do so. He established a great Naval harbor near Brenndan, next to the trading docks. A massive Naval Fleet sailed to the aid of overseas Trading partners, to protect the Trading routes, and to stop the piracy. With this action, Ramos had put the name of Calania on the world map as a nation to be reckoned with. It still took about 15 years, before the debts were paid off, and the economic situation in Calania was restored. |
