The path of Illusion or Mind Magic (Illusionist or Magician).

This way of using magic is most common, and the basics are fairly easy to master. It's the art of controlling the mind. It all comes with a slide of hand and trying to trick the mind of your opponent. Making a handkerchief disappear is one fine example of manipulating the mind of the viewer. Of course making a hanky disappear isn't  enough to disable an Orc or other monster. More skilled Illusionists can trick ones mind into seeing things that aren't there, and convincing them they are. This way, an illusionist brings fear or confusion on the mind of an opponent. Mages and sorcerers don't see this as real magic, although it takes a strong mind and hard study to create believable illusions.

The path of Elemental Magic (Mage, Wizard and Sorcerer)

This path of magic is much more powerful, and more difficult to master. The base for this kind of magic is using the right components and spells to achieve your goal. The right combination of components and spells is given in many spell books. Most spells use Astral Energy as spell component, but sometimes a supplemental component is needed in addition to Astral Energy. Mastering elemental spells takes years of study and practice. An elemental spell only works, if you have the right spell components and the incantation of the spell is done properly. A slip of the tongue or a wrong pronunciation can be devastating  to the effects of a powerful elemental spell. You won't be the first Magic users who will blow himself up pronouncing a fireball spell the wrong way.

The path of Conjuration or Summoning (Conjurer or Necromancer)

This way of magic is the most powerful, but most corrupting path of the art of magic. For using a successful spell, a Conjurer or Necromancer has to give up a piece of his own being. This path of Magic can be used to heal, but also to summon creatures. This way of magic consumes the caster of the spell. It's always involved with giving up a piece of the casters' sanity or life force. Instead of using spell components, a successful spell takes a sacrifice from the caster, being a sacrifice of mind or body. Most Conjurers or Necromancers have made a pact with the gods Elmacon or Hecata to grant them this powerful way of Magic, but it will cost their soul and there is no turning back, once you take this path. The Elder head of the magic council, Valendir the Wise, has only one saying about this path of magic: "Be a powerful Magic user in this life, but be a slave of Evil for eternity".

Magic comes in many forms, and can be used in several ways. Most Magic is neutral of character, but the way and purpose you  use it, makes what kind of Magic it becomes, being Good, Neutral or Evil. For instance: you use a spell to heal a person. The spell itself has a Neutral character, but because you use it for a good purpose (preserving life, or healing a person), the spell becomes a Good spell. It all has to do with your character profile and the intentions you have, using the spell. The Gods will weigh your intentions, and the Astral Energy (=Spiritual Energy) you give to the spell, before they grant you the outcome being positive. When your intentions are selfish or false, the gods will deny you a positive result. If the Gods grant you a positive result of the spell you'll be rewarded, if not the spell won't work and you waste your Astral Energy, which you lay into the spell.
